Willard Carrol Smith II also known as Will Smith or the fresh prince, is an American actor, rapper, and producer.

He was born on September 25, 1968, in Philadelphia to Caroline and Willard Carrol Smith Sr. His mother was a school board administrator while his father was a U.S Air force veteran and refrigeration engineer.

Will grew up in West Philadelphia along with his elder sister, Pamela and 2 younger siblings, twins Harry snd Ellen. He attended Our Lady of Lourdes, a private Catholic elementary school in Philadelphia, and later attended Overbrook High School. His parents separated when he was 13 and divorced around the year 2000.


Will Started his career as the MC of the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh PRINCE. The duo produced rap albums and singles like Rock the house, parents just don’t understand and summertime. They won the Grammy award for best rap performance for the latter 2 and were no. 4 on the billboard hot 100.

In 1990, Smith was struggling financially after squandering money and underpaying his taxes. The internal revenue service garnished his income and seized his possessions due to his tax debt leaving Will broke. However, he got back on his feet after NBC signed him for a sitcom: The fresh prince of bel-air which was a success and thus Will’s acting career started.

Will Smith’s first major role was in the drama Six degrees of separation. He went on to star in blockbusters like independence day, men in black, i-robot and more.

Will Smith was nominated for the golden globe and academy award for best actor for his portrayal of Muhammed Ali in the 2001 biopic, Ali. He also appeared in the animated movie Shark Tale and the film I am Legend which were successful and cemented Will’s standing as the number one box office draw in Hollywood. Will has appeared in other movies like Hancock, After Earth, Focus, Suicide Squad, Bright, Alladin, Spies in disguise and more, some of which were successes and others, disappointments.

Will Smith won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Richard Williams, the father and coach of tennis stars, Venus and Serena Williams, in the 2021 movie, King Richard. He also won the golden globe award for best actor and the screen actors guild award for outstanding performance.

Slap Controversy

Smith has received public backlash for slapping comedian Chris Rock at the 2022 OSCARS after the comedian made a joke referring to his wife Jada as G.I Jane due to her hair which she shaved because of her hair loss medical condition alopecia. Consequently, Will resigned from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. The Academy has also banned Will from attending any academy event for the next decade.

As a result of the controversy, several film projects involving Will Smith have been put on hold.
