The Metaverse and Gaming

What do we know about the Metaverse and how it affects gaming?

We know that the Metaverse is emerging, especially in the gaming world.

But what is the metaverse? How did it start?

What is the Metaverse

The Metaverse is a virtual universe where users can interact with one another and do a bunch of stuff they do in the real world within a virtual world.

Imagine entering Facebook, not as an app but as a virtual world where you can interact in real-time.

Just as our universe has different planets or worlds, the Metaverse has different virtual worlds.

It uses technologies like 3D modelling, AR, VR, IoT, Social networking and Blockchain to give users an immersive reality-like experience.

A perfect depiction of what the Metaverse would be is the “Oasis” in Steven Spielberg’s movie “Ready Player One” based on Ernest Cline’s novel with the same name.

The movie portrayed a virtual universe containing numerous different worlds that players access using virtual reality technology. The Oasis allowed users to meet and interact with people all over the world, experience a sense of touch through haptic gloves and suits, make money and spend it not just within the virtual space but also in the real world.

With the update from Ernest Cline’s book “Ready Player Two,” Oasis users get to experience real-world simulations that help them travel the world and enjoy new experiences from reality.

What is its origin?

The metaverse isn’t something you can say started from here or there. It has been slowly emerging with improvements in technology over time. But its earliest forms are in video games.

A good example of one of such games is the popular game “Clash of clans”. Clash of clans is an online multiplayer game that allows players to build kingdoms, join clans, interact with other players, engage in clan battles and share the plunder.

Though the game doesn’t use 3D, AR or VR technology, it gives players the feeling of existing in another world separate from reality.

This game is a metaverse because the game world doesn’t pause but moves on even after you exit the game on your device. That is, Your kingdom can be plundered by another player while you are offline. That right there is metaverse stuff.

Other games that portray this aspect of the metaverse are survival games like “Last Day on Earth”.

In terms of social networking, Avakin life and The Sims are among the first games that allow a player to live in a game world that mimics the real world.

Players in these games take on avatars that can interact with other players, make friends, attend parties, fight, sleep, eat, dress anyhow, get a job, purchase stuff, own a house, fall in love, get married, have kids and build a life in the game.

Fortnite and GTA5 also portray a metaverse with better graphics in an open world.

The Metaverse and Gaming today

Furthermore, video games are among the first modern forms of the metaverse.

Roblox, The sandbox, Decentraland and Epic games have created virtual worlds that are part of the metaverse where users can explore, interact, play games, and do a bunch of other stuff.

Like the Oasis, players on these platforms can earn tokens, cryptocurrencies or acquire items that can be sold in the virtual world or the real world for real money.

Roblox allows users to create games that become part of its virtual world.

Sandbox also allows players to create a part of its virtual world even rewarding them.

Epic Games has many P2E(play to earn) games that allow players to make money in the real world.

Conclusively, gaming is a major part of the metaverse. With emerging technologies, it is only going to get bigger and better.

I mean what happens if Meta, Google, Oculus, Ethereum, Epic Games, all collaborate to create something using Unreal Engine 5?
