Mike Tyson | Biography | Career | Controversies | Net Worth

On April 20, 2022, on a JetBlue flight from San Francisco to Florida, Retired Boxing legend Mike Tyson was seen repeatedly punching a bigger male passenger who was harassing him. In this article, we’ll talk about this fearsome boxer who was once called the “Baddest Man on the Planet”.

Biography

Michael Gerald Tyson popularly called Mike Tyson and nicknamed “Iron Mike” is a retired American Professional Boxer who, at age 20, became the youngest heavyweight champion in history.

He was born on June 30, 1966, in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, New York in a catholic family. Tyson’s biological father is a cab driver, Purcell Tyson, but Tyson grew up knowing Jimmy Kirkpatrick as his father. Kirkpatrick left his family and moved to Brooklyn where he met Tyson’s mother, Lorna Mae. He later abandoned the Tyson family around the time Mike was born, leaving Tyson’s mother to care for the children on her own.

Tyson’s mother died when he was 16, leaving him in the care of the Boxing Manager and Coach, Cus D’amato. Mike was brought to D’amato after a detention centre counsellor discovered his ability during his time in reform school.

D’amato taught Tyson the “peek a boo” fighting style that made him a champion. Kevin Rooney assisted D’amato in training Mike and eventually took over from him after his death.

Career

Mike Tyson made his professional debut as an 18-year-old on March 6, 1985, in Albany, New York. He defeated Hector Mercedes via first-round Technical knockout.

Fighting frequently, Tyson won 26 of his first 28 fights by KO or TKO; 16 of those came in the first round.

On November 22, 1986, he became the youngest heavyweight champion in history and claimed the crown of the World Boxing Council (WBC) after defeating Berbik. On March 7, 1987, he acquired the World Boxing Association (WBA) belt when he defeated James Smith. After he defeated Tony Tucker on August 1, 1987, Tyson was unanimously recognized as champion by all three sanctioning organizations (WBC, WBA, and International Boxing Federation [IBF]).

In 1988, Tyson married actress Robin Given. However, the couple divorced in 1989 amid allegations that Tyson had physically abused her.

On February 11, 1990, in one of the biggest upsets in boxing history, Tyson lost the championship to lightly regarded James (“Buster”) Douglas, who scored a technical knockout in the 10th round.

Tyson rebounded from the loss with four straight victories. In 1991, however, he was accused of raping a beauty pageant contestant and was convicted of the charge in 1992.

Following his release from prison in 1995, Tyson resumed boxing and in 1996 regained two of his championship belts with easy victories over Frank Bruno and Bruce Seldon.

On November 9, 1996, in a long-anticipated bout with two-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, Tyson lost for the second time in his professional career, by a technical knockout in the 11th round. In a rematch against Holyfield in 1997, he was disqualified after he twice bit his opponent’s ears. As a result, he lost his boxing license.

Tyson was released after serving just a few months of the one-year sentence.

Tyson once again had the opportunity to fight for a heavyweight championship in 2002. A match between him and Lennox Lewis, who held the WBC, IBF, IBO and Lineal titles at the time was arranged.

Lewis dominated the fight and knocked out Tyson with a right hand in the eighth round. This fight was the highest-grossing event in pay-per-view history at that time, generating $106.9 million from 1.95 million buys in the US.
